Unhealthy Trends – Information about the rise in Diabetes and what you can do about it.

Since 1958 our country has seen a dramatic increase in the total number of people with diabetes, as well as a significant increase in the overall percent of the population who suffer as a result of the disease.

Are you surprised?

When you look back over a few key events in US history it is easy to see the reasons for the increase.  Below are a few:

  1. The advent of DTC pharmaceutical advertising. This occurred in 1980, and it gave rise to a false sense of security that no matter what, big pharma would protect us and keep us healthy.  No matter what choices we made regarding our lifestyle.
  2. The introduction of the first video game. It all started with Pong in 1972, which was followed by the proliferation of the video game market beginning on 9/23/1989 with the birth of Nintendo.  Instead of going outside to ride their bikes or throw a ball around, kids became glued to their television playing video games for hours at a time.
  3. The rise of fast food. By the 1950’s fast food was well established. By the 60’s the child’s menu became standardized throughout the industry, which gave rise to advertising focused on kids.  Because of our fast-paced lifestyles, the fast food industry continued to skyrocket into the 21st  Instant gratification was easy with these high calorie foods rich in sugar, simple carbs, and partially hydrogenated oils, aka trans fats.
  4. The explosion in the processed food industry. Our dietary habits have made a dramatic switch away from eating whole fresh foods to consuming canned or packaged foods that are rich in sugar to make them taste more appealing. In 1982, Americans spent 11.6% of their food budget on processed food.  By 2012 that number rose to 22.9%.  The USDA now says that Americans are eating 31% more processed food vs. fresh food.

What can you do to stop the trend?  We’ve got a few ideas:

  1. Get 7-9 hours of quality sleep a night. This is necessary for proper regeneration and cell repair.
  2. Drink water. Some say 1 ounce for every 2 pounds of body weight daily.
  3. Get moving. Exercise regularly. We recommend Burst exercise.  30-60 seconds of “intense” activity that makes it difficult to talk.  Then rest for 2-3 minutes.  Repeat 3 or more times.  This type of exercise has been shown to increase human growth hormone and burn fat for 3 days.
  4. Consider a Ketogenic Diet. 70% Fat/Oil, 20% Protein, 10% Carbs. Sugar kills us slowly.
  5. Detox. Toxins play a role in blocking intercellular communication.
  6. Add regular chiropractic care. It is shown to have a profound effect on immune system and overall health.
  7. Get BEMERED. BEMER is a pulsed electromagnetic wave. It was created and developed in Germany 20+ years ago and has been used in hospitals and doctor’s offices throughout Europe to treat a variety of conditions.  This sophisticated medical device has been proven to increase micro circulation by 30% after just 1 eight-minute session.
